G’day I’m George Samios and I’m here to tell you about what I think is Melbourne’s best job and if you’re interested in wine this is probably the best wine job in the world. If you’re successful in our wine business you’ll do some amazing things and we’ll have a great time doing it.
Our main role here is to profile the great wine brands that we have here such as Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Seppelt, Coldstream Hills and these are just our Australian brands. A key part of our role is supporting our sales teams around Australia and around the world. Remember that our great brands are sold in over 80 countries around the world.
We could be hosting a wine media event one day and hosting a consumer lunch at Crown Casino the next. A big part of your role will be helping me with a range of events.
Our role these events is often Master of Ceremonies so we need to host our guests, liven the room up and draw out the stories from our winemakers. Ultimately we want everybody in the room to leave having had a good time and as an advocate of the wines they’ve tasted.
Obviously you need to understand wine. This isn’t just reciting notes from a book but having a true understanding and appreciation of our wines and being able to describe them in terms that your audience understands. You could be talking or writing so good verbal and written communication skills are important.
You need to have an entrepreneurial spirit to identify new opportunities to promote our wine and Australian wine. You need to be able to work under pressure which might come from having a number of things on the go at the same time.
You also need to have a commercial side and the appreciation that we’re here ultimately here to successfully build our brands for the next generation.
We get to work with great characters too, like Wolf Blass himself. He’s a good friend of mine and we travel all over the world sharing our passion for wine with people. He always asks me at the end of an event if the people had a good time. If they have, then we’ve done our job, he says. He believes, as I do that wine is all about having fun.
